Shopify secures $100 mln Series C funding

The ecommerce platform provider, Shopify, has raised $100 million in Series C funding round. The funds have come in from OMERS Ventures and Insight Venture Partners along with existing investors Bessemer Venture Partners, FirstMark Capital, Georgian Partners and Felicis Ventures.

The funding will be utilised to let the company work towards its plans to expand focus on offline retail world as well. Shopify is aiming to introduce a unique product that will fuse the offline world with the online world.

Keeping the offline retail world, the company earlier this year had launched a point-of-sale system and Square-style mobile card reader. These products were to synchronise the in-store and online inventory, process and accept credit cards, and generate sales reports.

India gears up for Great Online Shopping Festival

Amazon launches ‘One Day Delivery’ service; pilots COD

The ecommerce marketplace, Amazon India, has launched its pilot project for Cash on Delivery service driven by India Post. The service is being tried along with reverse logistics.

COD will only be practiced on products that are being ‘Fulfilled by Amazon’. The customer can see the tag of ‘Fulfilled by Amazon’ on the product and “Eligible for Cash on Delivery” on the product details page. COD is currently being offered with no extra charges but going further a convenience fee of Rs 39 will be charged.

The marketplace has also launched ‘One Day Delivery’ service. The service is limited to selected pin codes and cities including Bangalore, Mumbai, New Delhi, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad and Pune. So customers in the selected pincodes can choose for the service at the time of check-out. To avail the service, you have to pay Rs 99.

Koovs to go public next year; aims to raise GBP 22 Mn

The multi-brand lifestyle online retailer, Koovs, has announced its plans to go public next year and get listed on the Aim, a sub-market of London Stock Exchange.

Koovs had recently brought on-board Asos ex-chairman Lord Waheed Alli and Robert Bready as Chairman and Creative & Retail Director, respectively.

Through the listing, Anant Nahata, the founder of Koovs, plans to raise GBP 22 million for the company. Nahata will be floating 35 per cent shares in the market and the rest will be divided among Nahata, Lord Alli and other management.

The site which started business as a deal site, in 2012 became a full-fledged online retail store, selling a wide array of lifestyle brands focused on women. Though the company soon plans to expand offerings to menswear as well.

DTDC launches online shopping store

The logistics company, DTDC, has now launched its own online shopping site. The store, shop.dtdc.com, has been powered by Martjack and operates on the marketplace model.

The online store is selling a wide variety of products ranging from clothing, eatables and accessories. Moreover, the shipping is being done across India and other 225 overseas countries including Canada, USA, UK and Australia.

It was earlier this year that the logistics company had started a separate arm to provide courier services to ecommerce players.

‘Best price’ takes an ugly turn; retailers accuse e-retailers of predatory pricing

The obvious price war has come in to action between brick and mortar retailers and e-retailers, which otherwise has been discussed but never complained of.

It’s no new that we all look for best deals online for a product which we might have liked over the shelf before we actually buy it. This consumer behaviour has affected the sales of many brick and mortar retailers across the country.

Not taking anymore, these retailers, mostly from Bangalore, have collectively written to CCI (Competition Commission of India) complaining against e-retailers including Flipkart and Snapdeal which run a marketplace, thus offering some best price. They have complained of online counterparts selling goods below cost and skirting Indian laws on foreign direct investment in retail. The letter has also questioned the legality of operations of some foriegn funded online retailers.

There are more than 1000 retailers who are now fighting their right to survive and grow.

IRCTC Shopping adds books and luggage category

IRCTC Shopping and SOTPL (which runs Yebhi.com) has announced the launch of two new categories to the shopping portal: luggage and books. The expansion has come after three months of the launch of the shopping portal and have been added based on customer feedback and demand.

Interestingly, these two categories are one of the key ingredients while one is traveling and gels well with the IRCTC core business, railway ticket bookings.

Books:
The website offers over 20,000 books from various categories ranging from fiction, sci-fi, non-fiction, mystery, literature, bestsellers, etc to name a few.

Luggage:

$14 million funding pours in for HomeShop18

The multi-channel retail company, HomeShop18 has raised $14 million in a follow-on funding round from G S Home Shopping, funds managed by OCP Asia and Network18.

Owned by Network 18, the company statement says, GS will invest $11 Million; OCP Asia
& Network18 will invest the remaining amount. The transaction values HomeShop18 at $360 Million.
Network18 will remain the majority shareholder (51 per cent) in HomeShop18. SAIF Partners, GS Home Shopping and OCP Asia are the other existing investors at Hom
